University Day 1 - Design Principles

Monday 26th September (Week 10) In the showroom Cinema Screen 3 we had our welcome introduction and module breakdown.

The year is separated into two semesters, (semester 1 and semester 2)
within semester 1 there are two modules Design Principles and Design Process. Design Principles module is worth 20 credits and Design Process is worth 40 credits. Semester 2 consists of one module called Design Practice which is worth 60 credits. Overall the year is worth 120 credits.
Throughout the year I will have 12 hours per week of studio session and then we are expected to carry out self-directed study for a total of 152 hours where we will have to carry out sketchbook work, research etc.

Throughout the first semester, we will have inductions on how to uses specific processes (screen print for example) our first induction is on the 28th of October where we will be shown how to use the screen printing equipment.

Within week 15 we will be going on a field trip to Castleton.
After the basic information was presented we got a more in-depth look into our first module for the semester.

Design Principles

Module Aims

In this module, you will embrace some of the fundamental principles and creative development skills required of a Graphic Designer/Visual Communicator. The module aims to encourage you in exploring and applying these principles and skills in your creative responses to a range of situations and when considering opportunities for design. A key intention is to develop your approach to working through experimentation and creative risk-taking strategies, both independently and in a studio environment, adopting appropriately safe working practices.

Module Brief - What is Sheffield's Character?

Design an alphabet based on your map. From your observations. research, image making and ideas about the area of Sheffield you was assigned, explore ways to capture the character through letterform design. You must consider the relationship of all 26 letters, and how they correspond to each other when writing words. (adding punctuation and symbols are optional.)

Explore - Shape, scale, negative space, form, composition, mark making and legibility.

Submission Guidelines

At least 26 letters in upper or lowercase (or both), on either A4 or A3 paper landscape orientation. On another page write at least two words with the letters from the alphabet you have created.
In addition, you will be expected to submit all of the following as a range of concepts organised in a portfolio:
Sketchbook(s)
Images (Drawings, Prints, Photography, Collage etc.)
Letterform, Alphabet Designs and Writing

Weekly Breakdown
At the beginning of each week, we will be given all the information we need for that week.

Week 10 - Research - Collecting
Week 11 - Type - Letterform Design
Week 12 - Image Making - Type as Image
Week 13 - Communication - Intervention

Research - Collecting Brief (Week 10)

As part of the research for the brief for the first week, we have also been set a research brief called Collecting. where we will spend a prolonged period (around 6 hours) in a zone of the city centre Sheffield. Explore it and be adventurous, whilst also taking time to sit still and carefully observe your surroundings.

Become a collector of typography and character. Generate a body of research using as many different devices for translating your experiences and observations of all the type you find in your zone, whilst recording and establishing what character you notice in your assigned area of Sheffield.

Assigned Area of Sheffield

For this project I have been assigned to zone 10 which is shown in the map below:

Each zone has been assigned to 14 people who are either studying Graphic Design or Illustration at Sheffield Hallam University.

In the afternoon session at 15:00 till 17:00 we sat together with everyone from our zone and created a sketchbook with a cover that we collaboratively worked on at different time intervals drawing our specific zone onto the cover of our sketchbooks. where I found that working collaboratively the quality of the cover design improved. We also got to look at an example of different sketchbooks to give us an idea of what we should be including and recording our research. However how we record out research and findings is completely up to us, if that's in an A3 sketchbook or an A5 sketchbook we all work in different ways.

What Next...

Tuesday 27th September 14:00 till 17:00 - Typographic Mapping

Before the session, I will start to conduct research into typography and characters. Looking at different designers, going to visit my assigned zone and start recording my findings within my sketchbook.
